Local company opens new avenues for artists
The music management company Four Kings? main aim is to facilitate avenues for up and coming artists.
?We have a simple office. What we do is take in sample CDs and people send them from New York and Miami,? he said. ?Basically Four Kings is a management production company and we put people together. We don?t have the experience to say you?re good or you?re not good.
?What we do say is that we are average guys who know what we like, and if we think you have a great voice we say, ?let?s see who we know so that we can pass you on?.?
Four Kings? Devra Noel-Simmons and Kevin Busby met Qwes through Glenn Tucker.
?I had spoken to him over the phone and he had mentioned his interest in getting recognised as an international recording star.
?He sent his resume as far as what he had done with Universal Records and his vision of what he was trying to do. I pretty much saw what he was saying and also as a way of pushing Bermuda.
?It is interesting because we have so many local as well as international stars flowing through the Island, but there was nothing to push it. But now we have the Bermuda Idol and Tha Underground Music Awards and I think the thing that impressed me the most was that there are a lot of talented people here and they are finally getting that opportunity to go and do things. It?s good to actually hear about it.?
For instance Craig Simons who has done the beats that Qwes was looking for.
?No one even suspects that a Bermudian is doing these things,? said Mr. Noel-Simmons.
?But to me it is kind of normal, Bermudians travel and we get into things, but we just don?t over exploit it I guess.?
The talent is here whether it is sports or music, he said.
?I give people like Miss Thang, Brother Richie, people from Power 95 and HOTT 107.5, a lot of credit,? he said.
?They put it out there for kids to get into, so finally this complaint about there is nothing to do is really a fallacy, because there is so much to do because everything is linked overseas.?
The song that Qwes has been working on has a ring come true about it said Mr. Noel-Simmons.
?Metaphorically, it?s totally about Bermuda and when you look at what the song is about it is an everyday paradise in Bermuda.
?It is going to be great when he does the video and I think that everyone is going to be really surprised. Bermudians will be really patriotic and think that is by us and I think that will be good.?
Networking is so important and it has seen many local and international potential stars move along.
?Local reggae artist Oli Simmons is recording in Jamaica,? he said.
?Qwes was working with another international recording artist Marva King who was brought in to see me and talk with me and what not through another person.
?Qwes and Marva were here at the same time and they did a single together and that was all through Bermudian networking. They did a soundtrack for a movie, which should be coming out next year.
?Also local Ninja Cutty has done something with Marva King.?
Honesty in the industry is one of the most important things, he said.
?It goes a long way because the artists are so used to being shafted and made big promises,? he said.
?No you are not going to make them this big star, no you are not going to make loads of money in the beginning ? you have to bust your tail and work every single moment of the day on improving your voice, improving your social and writing skills. It is a full-time occupation.
?These kids are in the studio time from 6 a.m. for eight to ten hours just to get one song perfectly right. This is a full-time thing.?
