Modelling agency launched
Aspiring models in Bermuda ? and advertisers looking for the best faces and personalities to represent their products ? should now benefit from a new one-stop shop to facilitate their coming together.
Over the years, JaKoMa Entertainment has put on a host of fashion shows and was instrumental in launching the career of Bermuda's newest international model Stacy Dawson, and now the company's director, Lamont Robinson, is set to launch a modelling agency and school in the new year.
He toldthat JaKoMa NeX Agency will be fully operational in January 2007 and ready to offer businesses and photographers professional models ? for runway, print or other commercial purposes ? as well as a variety of training opportunities for models and actors.
For those keen to enter the modelling industry, the agency is having an open call audition tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m.
"Male and female models are wanted for high fashion, petite, plus size and children's modelling,"
Mr. Robinson said. "You must have personality and be confident, no experience is required and we are accepting models from the age of six and above.
"So, if you have always dreamed of, or are interested in print, runway, commercial or promotional modelling come to the open call."
Mr. Robinson said, although high fashion models are generally expected to be of a certain height and clothing size, there are many other aspects to modelling which have different requirements.
"There is work in commercial, showroom, promotional, parts modelling and more," he said.
"When you see an ad with a short, stocky guy in a suit with a brief case, he's a model.
"Or a tall, older person advertising hair dye, he or she is a model. Or, a shot of a wrist and hand showing off a Rolex watch, that hand belongs to a model.
"Advertisers are in need of all types of looks that come in all of shapes, heights and sizes."
JaKoMa NeX will place some restrictions on size, however, he said.
"By industry standard, we will accept between petite models wearing size 0 clothes and plus size models wearing size 18 clothing, he explained.
"If your weight causes you to be beneath or above these limits you will not qualify for the course or the agency."

Meanwhile for those interesting the modelling, broadcasting and acting school, there will be an open house on Sunday at JaKoMa's headquarters on the corner of Victoria Street and Cedar Avenue.
Mr. Robinson said the school will accept students from the age of 13 and up but hopes to eventually expand to the age of six and above.
"The JaKoMa NeX Modelling School will take you on an adventure of runway, print, video, commercial, hosting and acting," he said.
"You will learn what is expected of you as a model on both the local and international circuits.
"You will experience photo-shoots, fashion shows, live studio recordings, video commercial recordings, interviews, public speaking, hosting and acting."
He added: "This course is designed for those who are serious about modelling, being in the public eye or learning the industry."
Among the things that will be taught in the modelling classes are fundamental walks, stops, turns and poses for the runway and, for the print media, the models will learn posing, expressions and gestures as well as hand, shoulder, chin and eyes placement. The classes will also encourage balanced living.
"It will be our aim to encourage proper eating habits and offer exercise routines and healthy hints on maintaining your figure," Mr. Robinson said.
There will be 15 students per class, which will have one teacher and one assistant.
All the teachers have been involved in the fashion industry for more than eight years and have all studied as models, worked professionally as models, trained models and coordinated or produced fashion shows and photo-shoots. "The teachers are Xenia Dill, Mariam Smith and myself," said Mr. Robinson."
For the broadcast media enthusiast, Mr. Robinson says the school's curriculum will also cover hosting a radio and television show.
He said: "This particular part of the course will cover all aspects of being a host for radio, television and stage and exactly how to prepare. It will also teach skills on how to captivate the audience and body placement."
Acting courses will also be available for budding thespians.
Courses begin on January 8. For more information email jakomanorthrock.bm or visit www.jakoma.com.
