BNG hosting lecture on NY artist
Author Dr. Ann Eden Gibson will deliver a lecture entitled 'Norman Lewis's Diasporic Myth and the Ritual Paintings' at the Bermuda National Gallery on November 13 at 6 p.m.
New York school abstract expressionist Mr. Lewis (1909-1979) was born in Harlem, New York of Bermudian parents, Wilfred and Diana Lewis. Dr. Gibson's lecture (part of the current PartnerRe series) will include a brief overview of his career in the context of postwar abstraction in New York City, and then focus on Lewis's development of a set of abstract forms with which to represent the Civil Rights demonstrations in the 1960s as structures in which the possibility of a strong and health African American presence in the US was being simultaneously contested and articulated.
Dr. Gibson is professor and chair of 20th century American and Contemporary Art at the University of Delaware. She writes on modern and contemporary art, and is best known for her work on abstract expressionism.
The lecture will be preceded by a reception at 5.30 p.m., and tickets ($5 members, others $10) can be reserved by telephoning 295-9428.
In addition, the Gallery is exploring the possibility of an exhibition of Norman Lewis' work at a future date, and is appealing for anyone with knowledge or biographical information regarding his parents, Wilfred and Diana Lewis, who are said to have owned a bakery in Bermuda, to telephone 292-9428.
