lThe Bermuda Ballet Association (BBA) is again inviting applications from talented young Bermudian dancers for its Patricia Calnan Memorial Awards. The awards were established two years ago in honour of the late Ms Calnan, author, well-respected former journalist on and Mid-Ocean News, and a keen supporter of the arts who was particularly encouraged by the talent and dedication of many of Bermuda?s young performing artists.
The Patricia Calnan Memorial Awards, which are open to students over the age of 12 from all of the local dance schools, go towards dance tuition.
The closing date for applications is Friday, June 11, 2004 at 5 p.m. Interested students should fax 234-3830 to request an application form.
Last year, seven young dancers, representing all of the Island?s dance schools, received awards to assist them with summer programmes both here and overseas, one of whom subsequently wrote to the BBA?s Scholarship Committee saying that going to New York had changed her as a person and opened her eyes to becoming a more dedicated dancer.
Chairman Sallie Singleton said the BBA Scholarship Committee felt Ms Calnan would have been delighted to know that future generations of dancers were benefitting from her legacy, and it was the Association?s wish to continue honouring her memory again this year.
To that end the BBA was appealing to all who knew Ms Calnan to support the Memorial Scholarship Fund through donations.
To further boost its fund-raising efforts, the Association will host an evening dinner cruise on Sunday, May 23 from Albuoy?s Point, tickets for which are available from BBA committee members, or by faxing 234-3830.

?Shadows and Silhouettes? is the title of the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard?s next juried exhibition. It opens to the public on Monday, April 19 and continues through June 4. Amy Evans, Vaughan Evans and Lee Finch are the featured artists. With Bermuda?s dramatic light being popular subject matter for many artists, the gallery anticipates it being an outstanding exhibition.
