Premier has high praise for student delegation to the UN

Premier Alex Scott honoured 13 local students who represented Bermuda in the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York recently.

Making his first public statement after visiting the Bermuda Regiment in Grenada the Premier said young people are making extraordinary ambassadors of Bermuda.

?In recognition of the accomplishment and talent and future of the youngsters, they will get a certificate to document the event,? Premier Scott said in the Cabinet building last week.

Five Berkeley students, three CedarBridge students and two Bermuda High School students went to the 29th United Nations International School Conference this year.

?It was a wonderful experience,? Jahmarley Gardiner of CedarBridge said.

?It opened my eyes that Bermuda is small but world-wide issues are going on.?

Travis Stevens, Jr. thanked Global Arts Entertainment for giving him the opportunity to travel.

?I always come back empowered and enlightened to strive for a better country for ourselves,? he said.

Bermuda High School student Azzura Lalani said she had an incredible experience in her first visit to the UN.

Chief executive officer of Global Arts Entertainment, Andrew Phillips congratulated the attendees for doing such an excellent job.

?It is part of Bermuda?s quest for global peace,? he said.

He also said this year marked the passing of several of the senior students in the delegation from the group as they are leaving to go to university abroad.

?The new ones are coming in,? he said. ?It is sad to see the old ones leave.?

This year the students made a presentation to the United Nations on the possible application of Bermuda?s water collection to developing countries.

The two-day global health conference ran from March 4 to March 6.

?The future of Bermuda is secure if this is the quality of young people here,? Premier Scott said.
