Sandy sets his sights on an Island trek for charity

President of the Hamilton Lions Club Sandy Mitchell will attempt to walk the length of the Island this weekend to raise more than $15,000 for people with impaired vision.

Mr. Mitchell, who was himself born with cerebral palsy, is asking for as many people as possible to support him on the 21-mile journey, which will began at 6 am and is expected to last between 12 and 14 hours.

He will begin his walk in St. George's at daybreak tomorrow and will finish at Dockyard later that same day.

Along the way, he hopes to raise more than $15,000 in aid of Bermuda Society for the Blind and the Lions and Lioness Sight Conservation Fund that assists about 100 people every year with eyeglasses, eye operations and examinations.

Mr. Mitchell is an accomplished paralympian, is founder of WindReach Recreational Village, and a strong supporter of breaking down barriers for people with disabilities and special needs.

He will be splitting the arduous walk into four sections, and at the end of each section there will be a finish line featuring a ribbon, starting with bronze, silver and then gold. The final section will be marked with a platinum ribbon.

Individuals are being encouraged to pledge cash to the charity walk, and businesses are also urged to sponsor one of the ribbons. In return, major sponsors will be given recognition at the respective ribbon crossing.

Anyone interested should call Mr. Mitchell on 238-5271, or Andrew Myers on 292-7478 extension 119, or Dudley Cottingham on 292-7478 extension 103. People can also e-mail Mr. Mitchell at ajmibl.bm.
