?Seoul Sisters? in Festival debut
Three supremely talented Korean sisters (twins + one), collectively known as The Ahn Trio, open their two-night Bermuda Festival debut this evening at City Hall theatre, and for those lucky enough to hold tickets to their sell-out performances it promises to be an unforgettable event.
Hailed as a brilliantly distinguished ensemble gifted with extraordinary powers of communication, and an exquisite blend of sound, each of the artists performs with superb technique and contagious excitement.
As a trio, the young women deliver what an audience wants to hear ? not necessarily a revolutionary concept, but something which, in classical music, fell out of fashion for most of the last century but is now making a comeback.
?We have...evolved as a group,? Angella Ahn says. ?We all went to Juilliard, a very traditional kind of school. When we left there all of us were holding back a little bit, we were a little sceptical about doing things we really felt strongly about. To me, music is so much about expression and having aural, visual and emotional senses that come alive.?
Indeed, the term ?musical mental telepathy? has been used to describe this hip, eclectic and spontaneous sisterly trio, all of whom first played the piano. When Lucia developed a serious interest in that instrument, Angella took up the violin and Maria the cello. The ?Seoul Sisters? made their first ensemble appearance on Korean television in 1979. In 1987 Time magazine included them in a story about ?Asian Whiz Kids?, and features in top US publications soon followed.
As recording artists, the beautiful sisters have produced several albums, one of which earned Germany?s prestigious ECHO Award.
The Ahns support and encourage contemporary composers and the development of ?meaty? repertoire, which has sometimes been described as ?edgy?. The result is substantial, original works which look back on composers and traditions that have carried the piano trio thus far, and forward to new frontiers.
The Ahn Trio?s performances tonight and tomorrow night will begin at 8 p.m. Please note: City Hall theatre doors will close five minutes before curtain time, and there will be no late admissions until the interval.
