Bermuda National Gallery Lunchtime Series - Poetry Reading “The Sun in Three Countries”, by Nancy Anne Miller. 12.30 p.m. Free. Poetry reading by Nancy Anne Miller from her book “The Sun in Three Countries.” Nancy Anne Miller was born in Bermuda. She has a background in the visual arts. She holds a B.S. in Studio art from Skidmore College and an M.A. in Painting from Goddard College. She studied poetry with George Szirtes, the British poet and critic, in England for five years. She has exhibited and published her work in America, England and Bermuda. She received a Bermuda Art Council Grant for ‘Conch', a chapbook of her Bermuda poems and money from The Hibiscus Fund for ‘The Sun in Three Countries'.As a result of her training as an artist, her poetry is highly visual and her poems are built with image metaphors. ‘I think like a painter, building my poetry through visual links that open up into a deeper meaning through the layers that image metaphors bring to a poem.' Another Bermudian poet, Edwina Trentham says of her work, ‘Nancy Miller's poetry is deceptive. The rich and resonant surface is about beauty, sensual images that catch the breath and being of the island. But equally rich is the message beneath this surface-a passionate concern for language that entwines and illuminates the rich imagery.' Nancy lives in Washington, Ct. where she writes and leads poetry workshops throughout the year.
