Workshops aim to put additional resources at teachers? fingertips

Teachers are being invited to attends workshops on January 27 intended to better familiarise them with the community and its many resources of interest to educators.

Among the organisations involved in hosting the workshops are the Ministry of Works and Engineering, the Bermuda National Trust, Masterworks, Bermuda National Gallery and the St. David?s Historical Society. The aim is to make teachers aware of some of the resources available to them such as printed materials, personnel, hands-on activities and unique on-site facilities, said Masterworks Foundation education officer Carrie Zenti.

A comprehensive list of the 22 workshops offered has been e-mailed to all schools.

?These offerings are also open to teachers in alternative settings such as home-schools or summer programmes,? added Ms Zenti.Newspapers In Education facilitator Jennifer Hind said this was the first time something like this has been done.

?We?re really excited about meeting teachers and making them aware of what we can do to help them,? she said.

Among the workshops on offer will be:

An introduction to square-foot gardening at Bermuda Zoological Society.

The Bermuda Audubon Society will welcome participants to build bluebird boxes and learn about monitoring bluebird trails.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful, Dolphin Quest, Bermuda Botanical Gardens, Conservation Services, Bermuda Zoological Society and Bermuda National Trust will offer conservation workshops including an outdoor-guided tour through Paget Marsh, Walsingham or the Botanical Gardens.

St. George?s Foundation on their new History Day programme.

BUEI has offerings for enhancing science and social studies curricula for primary teachers.

Bermuda Sloop Foundation on the and its alternative educational resources.

?Know your Library? at the Bermuda National Library.

Newspapers in Education on an upcoming co-operative project using print media as poetic inspiration for student writers.

Bermuda National Gallery on Japanese woodblock printing and their educational resources.

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art on Art Smart, a classroom supplement focused on Bermuda art.

The workshops should be able to accommodate up to 300 teachers, however, registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Educators must register before Friday. Teachers are invited to register for one or, time permitting, two workshops by completing a form published in and submitting it to Amy Harvey by fax 292-7966 or e-mail amharveygov.bm.
