Solange digs it with 'Sandcastle Disco' ...
Season's greetings to one and all. Although it's Christmas time, I have to step to you all this week with a topic that is sobering, unfortunate and true. The topic is about the use of drugs and how it can affect your life.
More on this terrible story after The Top 20.
Holding at number one is Miss Independent by Ne-Yo, the hottest love song of the moment. This is DJLT's favourite hit at the moment and the one you'll hear me singing from time to time.
Improving to number two is the hip and cool new track by John Legend and Andre 3000, entitled Green Light.
Climbing to number three is Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) by Beyonce, hottest song and video of the moment. Wait until you hear the house mix.
Down to number four is Whatever You Like by T.I.
Falling to number five is Mrs. Officer by my namesake Lil Wayne featuring Bobby Valentino and Kidd Kidd, one of the hottest songs around and a former essential new tune.
Up to number six is Live Your Life by T.I. featuring hot girl and Bajan Bombshell Rihanna.
Soaring to number seven is Dangerous by Kardinal Official, from Canada, featuring Akon.
Slipping to number eight is Jennifer Hudson's monster new hip-hop track, Pocket Book, a duet with Ludacris, which is just a banging track.
Up to number nine is the new one from Jazmine Sullivan entitled Bust Your Windows. I like this track because it is real music from an artist who can truly sing, not someone who only sounds good in the studio.
Shifting gears to dance music, falling to number ten is current dance anthem Disturbia by hot girl Rihanna.
Climbing to number 11 is Right Here by Brandy, which is currently number one in a few dance and club play charts.
Moving on up to number 12 is Don't Call Me Baby by Kreesha Turner, which is dancing up the dance music charts.
Improving to number 13 is a former essential new hit, Get Up by Gospel Sister Duo Mary Mary.
Jumping one spot number 14 is Closer by Ne-Yo.
I Hate This Part, by the sexiest group of ladies around, the Pussycat Dolls, advances to number 15.
Slipping to number 16 is She's Royal by Taurus Riley.
Spotlight, by former American Idol songstress Jennifer Hudson tumbles to number 17.
Now some new hits. This week's biggest gainer and essential new jam is Chopped and Screwed by T Pain featuring Ludacris. This one is hot and enters the chart at number 18.
Also new at number 19 is Trading Places by Usher.
Finally, in at number 20 is Sandcastle Disco by Solange, Beyonce's little sister who was here for our very own 2008 Bermuda Music Festival.
Now back to this week's words: what drugs can do to and for you!
Many young people in Bermuda smoke weed and think it's no big deal. We even have idiots like Collie Buddz (if you do illegal drugs then I think you're an idiot. I am entitled to my opinion - I like his music but disagree with the lyrics) telling people that it is OK to smoke weed because it comes from the earth, just don't do the other drugs.
Well, for starters it's against the law. Secondly, if you get caught with it you may go to jail and have your travel privileges removed! Now, you know Bermudians like to travel. We are all smart enough to know this up front, before people smoke marijuana. We know the consequences of a decision and after we make the decision and get caught, we want somebody to help get us off the US Stop List.
Well, in life there are consequences and since people know those consequences up front, I don't feel sorry for them later on when they can't travel.
However, I had an experience earlier this week that really drove home what can happen when you smoke marijuana. I hope young people read this, or some sensible adult in the family who reads this may pass this story on to them.
A young Bermudian came to me for assistance in finding a job. And guess what? This time it wasn't a guy. It was a young female, early 20's.
I put forth my best efforts to place the person in position to get a pretty good job. Even though this individual has no college degree, she passes the first round of tests and meets the competency requirements.
Then comes the physical - the sister passes with no problems.
Then comes the dreaded drug test. Home girl passes the urine test, but guess what? The intelligent employer also does the hair follicle test!
News flash Bermuda! Get a life and leave the drugs alone! The sister didn't want to take the test because she knew that she had smoked weed within six months and would therefore fail the hair follicle test.
So, because she smoked marijuana, she can't get a job!
That's this week's revelation for people - young and old. If you smoke weed you could lose your job or deny yourself from getting a job. Don't say that people wouldn't hire you because you smoke or smoked weed. You must say that you know that marijuana is illegal in this country but you still chose to smoke it and as a result of that, you can't get a job or you may lose the one you have.
What I don't understand is why people expect anyone to feel sorry for them when they know the rules and they knew the consequences.
So, the moral of the story is the old President Ronald Regan motto, which I think was actually coined by his wife, then First Lady Nancy Regan who said, "Just say no to drugs".
There is no better way to say it and no other advice that anyone can give you. Just leave it alone.
If you want to do drugs then go to Amsterdam or somewhere it is legal and permitted. You know the rules here and you know the consequences. If you do drugs, you lose.
It even happens on sports teams who can't field the best players because some of the better players smoke weed or do other illegal drugs.
Then these guys want people to call in favours with the US Consul General or try to travel through Canada or other places so that they can go somewhere.
The solution is to just say no to drugs...DJ LT
