'Carter House' gets a a treat for Christmas

Historic 17th century 'Carter House'at Southside is all dressed up in its Christmas finery, and ready to welcome visitors on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

"The house has been beautifully decorated by Ronnie Chameau with natural Bermuda flora and fauna, and of course many examples of palmetto products, such as handbags, fans, hats and dolls — all locally made by Ronnie and the late Pansy Fox of St. David's," Richard (Rick) Spurling, president of the St. David's Island Historical Society, said.

In addition to enjoying the seasonal charms of the little white cottage on the former baselands, shoppers can help to raise funds for the on-going improvement of Carter House and its grounds by purchasing the St. George's Historical Society's first-ever Christmas card.

The front features a sketch by Mr. Spurling of Carter House as it was built originally, probably in the 1600s, with Santa humorously commenting on accessing the old chimneys, while inside there is a timely quotation by 19th century American author Washington Irving. Cards with blank insides are also available.

The cards retail for $2 each, or $1.50 each for 50 or more cards. In addition to Carter House, they are also available from the Animal & Garden House, St. George's Foundation, Godet & Young, Robertson's Drug Store, the Book Cellar, and Mr. Spurling. For large orders e-mail rspurling[AT]logic.bm or call him at 297-1953.
