Nova Scotia choir to perform at Ebenezer Methodist Church

Free concert Visiting gospel group ‘Godsent’ from the First United Church in Sydney, Nova Scotia will perform tomorrow evening at Ebenezer Methodist Church in St. George’s, under the direction of First United’s musical director Keith Burton. The girls, aged 12 to 19, held all sorts of fund-raisers to pay for their trip here.

Visitors to Ebenezer Methodist Church will be in for a treat tomorrow evening when the delightful voices of the gospel group, Godsent, will perform.

The group hails from First United Church in Sydney, Nova Scotia and is under the direction of the church's music director, Keith Burton.

According to Mr. Burton, "The group performs approximately 20 times per year at various church and community fundraising events, along with singing at church services. Once a year, they leave their island of Cape Breton and go sing out of the area. They get invitations to other churches to demonstrate what young people can do to enhance church services through music and to encourage other young musicians to get involved in their church using their talents."

In order to make the trip happen, the young women, who are aged 12 to 19, worked to raise the $13,000 to bring them all to Bermuda by selling chocolate bars, running bottle drives and bagging groceries.

This was in addition to their regular charity work, raising funds for other community groups.

After driving to Boston, the group arrived yesterday by cruise ship. They will be accompanied by family and friends, all of whom have paid their own way, and which allowed Godsent to reduce its own costs by securing a group rate.

Their first two days on the Island will be spent practising and sharing in public concerts in St. George's, followed by tonight's concert at 7 p.m.

"They sing traditional local [Canadian maritime] songs and contemporary gospel songs," explained Mr. Burton.

The group consists of Meredith Higgins, Holley Muise, Maia Greig, Alice Mills, Ali Butler, Tiffany MacDonald, Emily Woodcock, Bhreagh Ross and Joyanne Lyle.

They return home on September 2.
