Painting, singing .....and a unicorn

Next to his work 'Sublime Nude': Austrian artist and frequent Bermuda exhibitor Ernst Arnold Bauer with one of the works in his new show, 'Art Pure' now open at the Elliot Gallery in Devonshire.

Austrian artist Ernst Arnold Bauer (pictured above) opened a solo exhibition of new works at the Kaleidoscope Foundation's Elliot Gallery on March 6.

The mixed media exhibition is entitled 'Art Pure' — a title the artist has coined as the new declaration for the art on which he has worked for 43 years.

The exhibition combines paintings in oils, watercolours and acrylics with a series of new lithographs — an original charcoal drawing on stone which is transformed by a chemical process to create a print.

The artist has a limited edition of six lithographs with a total of 21 prints of an extraordinary subject: the German Catholic mystic and stigmatic Therese Neumann.

Mr. Bauer is a frequent visitor to the Island who draws inspiration from the quietness and peace of Ferry Reach where the pure light produces a great variety of colours not found in his German studio.

Over the years, he has exhibited in most of the Island's galleries, including the current show at the Bermuda Society of Arts.

Among the artist's early influences are early 20th century Austrian artists, including figurative painter Egon Schiele who was known for his powerful self portraits and symbolist painter Gustav Klimt.

The exhibition continues through March 31. For further information see the Bermuda Calendar.

Harvard singers to perform for Habitat

Earmark March 25 for a benefit performance by the Harvard Krokodiloes, the Harvard Din and Tonics, and the Radcliffe Pitches at the Anglican Cathedral.

The 12 noon concert is being presented by the American Consulate and, while admission is free, donations will be gratefully accepted by Habitat for Humanity Bermuda.

Hasty Pudding Theatricals return

We may not have College Weeks any more, but that doesn't stop the students of Harvard University's theatre company, Hasty Pudding Theatricals (HPT), from making their annual pilgrimage to the Island to present their latest zany, pun-filled production.

In fact, when they hit the boards at City Hall at the end of this month, it will be for the 44th year.

'Fable Attraction', the HPT's 160th production, will run from March 26-29, with an 8 p.m. curtain time.

The storyline is about a little wooden orphan boy who journeys through a magical kingdom in search of his long-lost parents.

A communist barkeep thwarts her maid's dreams of finding true love, a mysterious queen from the East plots for revenge that's been 2000 years coming, and a unicorn does unicorn-like things.

Tickets ($25) can be reserved on line at www.boxoffice.bm or purchased at City Hall box office from March 24-28 between 12 noon - 2 p.m. For group discounts/sponsorship telephone 295-2944 ext. 1803.
