Pair rise to top as dominoes fall

Eight teams of two battled for the title of Bermuda national champion at the first-ever Barmuvinjam Open Domino Tournament on Saturday.

Held at the Number Six shed on Front Street, the event drew out both competitors and spectators for a day of mental jousting.

The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural and Community Affairs as well as Dewar's and offered a $1,000 prize to the top dominoes pair.

In the end the team of Euell Smith and David Roberts, playing under the name "Team Maple Leaf Eh?", captured the top prize.

The champs defeated Team Z.J. in the finals by three sets to one to capture their title after three rounds of competition.

They have pledged to donate half of their winnings ($500) to the Parents Anonymous charity.

The consolation round saw team Cartel defeat the Mojitos by two sets to none.

Organisers said the event was a huge success and they hope to expand on it in the future.

"Competition was intense throughout, and the eventual champions were very worthy," said organiser Vejay Steede. "This event will become a staple in Bermuda in the coming years. Our major sponsor (Bacardi Premium Brands) has already committed to supporting the next one, and we have a series of tournaments in the works as qualifiers for the big 2008 championship tournament. Exciting stuff."
