Amethyst vows `fierce' showcase of fashion

Well-known Bermuda fashion designer, Amethyst of Natural Spirit Spirit Wear , has selected the new Pembroke Playground on Parson's Road to showcase his latest collection.

Slated for tomorrow at 6 p.m. the open-air event is free to the public -- although a donation box will be on hand.

Amethyst, known for his lavish shows, promises a full and colourful hour-long show, and vows no skimping because of the outdoor venue -- in fact it's quite the contrary he told The Royal Gazette .

This production has been his most involved, and he's looking forward to the challenges of working in a natural setting.

"I will be showing my spring/summer line which is absolutely fierce,'' noted Amethyst. "This year I have designed accessories and sandals, in addition to the actual clothes.'' "Linens, cottons, sheer, light, natural colour fabrics in three basic shapes -- square, rectangular and triangular will be prevalent.'' "I have put together unusual fabrications, there's a bit of Africa, India and Egypt, with transparencies letting you see into the next country.'' While a criticism of Amethyst has often been that it is too difficult to actually get one of his creations, he says that this year he is having the garments produced locally and he pointed out that all of the items shown will be available in a choice of fabrics.

There will be the opportunity to place orders after the show. Designs in this collection will range between $65 and $200. Limited seats will be available and those planning to attend are urged to bring their own. "Come, sit, bring a picnic basket, bring stools, dress is casual and it should be exciting.''
