Bank accounts for young artist

Butterfield general manager Mr. Colin Furr recently, in recognition of their winning entries in the Butterfield Mile colouring contest.

The annual competition attracted a record 2,800 submissions from the Island's primary schools, making selection of each category's best pictures all the more difficult.

The panel of judges charged with this monumental task were cartoonist Mr.

Peter Woolcock, artist Mr. Clyde Stovell and Bank of Butterfield employees Mrs. Janet Nearon and Mrs. Cathy Lapsley.

The top three artists in each category received certificates and savings deposit accounts in amounts of $50 for first place, $30 for second and $20 for third.

In a repeat of her 1992 performance, the overall winner of the competition was Vanessa George, who attends West Pembroke School. Vanessa received a $100 award for this special honour.

Mr. Furr encouraged the youngsters to use their new account to save for things they want to have. He told the gathering that the $800 in prizes awarded to last year's winners had grown to $4,200 in total savings.

The full list of winners is as follows (first, second, third): Primary 1: Justin Gravito, Christian Ardissone and Maria Darby; Primary 2: Adam Petty, Zuri Darrell, Renee Burt; Primary 3: Brady Dearden, Carl Soares, Waynette Hollis; Primary 4: Matthew Davis, Oliver Zawistowski, Stefan Furbert; Primary 5: Travis Tucker, Crystal Pitt, Thomas Okai-James; Primary 6: Michele Mayho, Blaize Burgess, Michele Cottingham; Special schools: Sarah Trott, Jason Kavanagh, Leonard Raynor; Primary 7: Vanessa George, Arthur Pitcher, Kondwani Williams.
