Unable to pay the fare, he said he believed he had left the wallet at a guest colony in Smith's, where he had briefly stopped off en route. The cabbie immediately returned there to retrieve the wallet.

It was later discovered but $10 was missing and the Police were alerted.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale said the driver had disappeared by the time officers arrived.

"We were unable to get his name -- he obviously acted in a very warmhearted manner,'' he added.

Sgt. Dale said the tourist had just arrived on the Island.

The intruder crept into the house in First Avenue through a window. He escaped with credit cards and papers, although nothing of great value.

Police are hunting a prowler who ran off after being challenged in the early hours yesterday by a man in Tribe Road No. 5, Paget.

The prowler, seen lurking in bushes, was tall, black, slimly built, and about 6ft 1in.

Police yesterday moved to correct errors they made concerning a car fire that occurred a week ago.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale said the fire occurred around 9.45 p.m., not a.m., in Par-la-Ville parking lot and it involved a white Suzuki.

FLASK OF VODKA COST MAN $25 CTS Flask of vodka cost man $25 A Pembroke man who stole a flask of vodka from the Hamilton MarketPlace was fined $25 in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Anthony Johnson placed the $8.50 flask of vodka in his pants and covered it with his shirt in an attempt to smuggle it out of the Church Street store, Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting said.

Johnson pleaded guilty to the June 10 theft.

Insp. Duffy said Johnson went to the liquor section of the supermarket, placed the flask in his pants and selected a bottle of malt which he paid for.

Johnson left the store, followed by the manager who confronted him and demanded the flask.

After a brief hesitation, Insp. Duffy said, Johnson gave the flask to the manager. He attempted to leave but was detained until officers arrived.

NAS SCHEDULES PUBLIC ACTION MIL NAS schedules public action Computers, ovens, typewriters, tools and a boat trailer are just some of the items up for grabs at a June 20 auction at the United States Naval Air Station.

The public auction is being held by the US Department of Defence Reutilisation and Marketing office. It kicks off at 9 a.m. at the NAS Bermuda base theatre.

Petty Officer Sharon Powell, from the NAS, said the items were surplus Government equipment.

"When Government find they no longer need property they periodically offer it to the public for sale at an auction. The money goes to the Treasury,'' she explained.

People can browse through the lots beforehand -- all items must be removed between June 22-23. Anyone interested in attending the sale should call 293-6304 for gate passes.
