Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott said rush-hour traffic would not be affected and work would also be timed to avoid flight arrivals.

But he warned delays would be longer than the 15-30 minutes normally experienced when the 50-year-old bridge suffered one of its breakdowns.

Mr. Scott said he hoped the tests would be completed by Monday or Tuesday and he apologised to the public for any inconvenience.

"We have to make sure everything is as it should be.'' He said the repairs should keep the bridge going for another six years while pressure was put on the American Government to keep its promise to pay for a new one.
