Focus on management, Kay Atkin speaks
Kay Atkin recently retired from her position as the human resources manager for Bermuda Drug Company, the Phoenix Stores and the BGA Group. Prior to her departure she gave us an overview about the organisations.
Ms. Atkin said: "The culture here is very positive. There has been a big positive change since George Grundmuller came. He has built up the corporate rapport between sales associates and managers.
"Staff have seen pay increases and are provided with working attire.'' She advised that training programmes have been implemented with the help of consultant, Janet Ferguson. "Retail Connection'' focuses on customer satisfaction. Last year this training was issued for eight months and every sales associate and manager attended.
This year's training focus is "Skills Training'' with an updated policy and procedures plan.
Ms. Atkin said: "The feedback from the staff, about 90, told they were impressed with the facilitator, Janet Ferguson and they want more.'' Training is a good link in any organisation, particularly if it is ongoing such as that of the Phoenix Stores.
"We look at individual training which many times result in internal promotions such as Robin Giles, manager and Deon Breary, assistant manager of the new "Waterfront'' Bermuda Pharmacy.
"We have some lovely people and it is rewarding for management and staff to see people progress and move up,'' Ms. Atkin remarked.
Ms. Atkin concluded that Phoenix management feels developing people is a priory because they want the sales associates to see there are long term career opportunities in retail.
