Governor to honour six for bravery
Government House tomorrow evening.
Governor Thorold Masefield will honour the six at the annual Bermuda Bravery Awards ceremony, starting at 5.30 p.m.
Several of the lifesaving awards are for daring rescues in treacherous rip currents kicked up by hurricanes this past summer.
Others are for the rescue of a toddler found floating in the ocean off the North Shore.
One award is for heroism when, in the face of extreme danger, a horse and carriage driver thwarted a thief attempting to rob two passengers.
Bravery Awards chairman Mark Selly expressed disappointment that only six names had been put forward by the public for recognition of deeds over and above the call of duty. Last year, 11 people were honoured.
Mr. Selly said: "I am urging the public to take note when they hear about heroic deeds. It is a simple process to obtain a bravery form from any Post Office or Police station, or they can be obtained directly from me.'' This year's recipients will receive a cedar-framed certificate listing their act of heroism.
Their names were submitted by the public and emergency organisations during the course of the past year and were judged by the executive committee of the Bermuda Bravery Awards Association.
