Historic photographs on display as Police Week comes to an end
Police Week '97 will culminate with an exhibition at City Hall this weekend.
Mid-Ocean News editor Tim Hodgson will open the exhibition at 11 a.m. today.
The exhibition -- which will open to the public from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m.
today and Saturday -- will feature historic Police photographs, modern photographic images of the Service and officers, and information about topical subjects such as closed-circuit television.
There will also be boards showing the lighter side of policing with humorous quotes from road traffic accident victims and people answering charges in court.
Other attractions will include a Police motorcycle and a Police quiz. Winning entries to a Police Week essay competition and colouring contest will also be on display.
The essay competition, with a theme of "If I were Commissioner of Police'', was open to all middle school students.
And while the competition was only held during September, Police said they received some 100 entries.
The overall winning entry came from Levoui Landy of The Middle School at Sandys. Runners up were Richard Beale of Warwick Academy, Alton Trott of Sandys, Vanessa Smith of Warwick Academy, and Melisa Dyce of Sandys.
A total of 1,630 primary school students entered the colouring competition.
Stephanie Chilvers of Bermuda High School for Girls was the overall winner of the Primary One through Three category. Bionka Swann of Francis Patton Primary won second prize, while third prize went to Ashleigh Nicholson of Southampton Glebe.
Christopher Maypa of Northlands Primary and Che Morrissey of West End Primary both received honourable mentions.
Overall winner of the Primary Four through Six category was Andre Mendonca of Warwick Academy.
Purvis Primary's Ashley Phipps received second prize, Jason Lindsay of West Pembroke Primary took third prize, and honourable mentions were given to Diana Rodrigues of Northlands Primary and Danielle Edwards of West Pembroke Primary.
