spent much of their lives trying to forge better relations between races''.

In its first-ever awards ceremony, the Commission presented trophies to the Hon. Robert (Bobby) Barritt and Mr. Roosevelt Brown at a reception held at the Belmont Hotel last night.

Commission chairman, Canon James Francis said Mr. Brown was chosen because of the work he had done to bring about universal franchise.

He said that Mr. Barritt was selected for his work as the former Minister of Community Affairs.

"Mr. Barritt gave us a real thrust to get out there,'' he said. "It was very difficult to select two persons. There are many, many more within our midst who must be honoured for outstanding work they have done and will continue to do.'' Minister of Community & Cultural Affairs the Hon. Leonard Gibbons pledged his Ministry's support to the awards programme and the work of the Commission.

Mr. Barritt said the award came "as a bit of a surprise'' but it was much appreciated.

Overcome with emotion, Mr. Brown thanked the Commission for selecting him as a recipient.

The Commission said it hoped to make the presentation an annual event.
