Hurricane Art Contest blows in soon

its third annual art contest for children ages five to 10. This year's theme is, "Scary Storms and Flying Objects''.

The winners, and as many honourable mentions as space provides, will be featured in the special Hurricane Supplement seto to published on June 1.

A winner will be chosen for each age category and only the winners will receive $25 gift certificates from Artcetera and have their work featured in the supplement. The winners will also be pictured in the supplement. The art contest will be judged by Marlee Robinson, curator of the National Gallery of Art.

Last year the judges enjoyed the vibrant colours and various mediums used by the children. They liked that the artists drew upon local themes and used originality depicting what is on the Island.

Last year's contest was very successful and drew 361 student drawings depicting the theme, "Hurricanes and the Sea''.

The rules for this year's contest are as follows: 1. All entries should be drawn by hand on a standard piece of white art paper size 9 x 12. Please strive to adhere to this rule. Usually the thick textured paper works best such as the Strathmore Pad available from Artcetera.

In the event you cannot obtain 9 x 12 paper, the judges will be somewhat flexible. However, entries larger than 11 x 14 will automatically be disqualified, no exceptions.

2. Any medium from pencil to pastels may be used. This includes: crayons, markers, watercolours, oils, pastels, pen and ink, coloured or ordinary pencil.

Mediums may be combined. Basically anything goes so enjoy being creative.

3. Only one drawing per artist will be accepted and should include the name of the artist, age, and title on the front, bottom right corner.

The school name and telephone number of the school, and home phone number should be listed on the back of the drawing.

5. Please focus on this year's theme of "Scary Storms and Flying Objects''.

6. Drawings must be sent to The Royal Gazette Ltd. , 2 Par-la-Ville Road, Hamilton Marked: "Hurricane Art Contest''. The deadline will be May 18 at 5 pm.
