Kidfest comes to a tuneful conclusion this weekend when popular Canadian singing duo Kirk and Magoo appear at the Elbow Beach Hotel.
"We Are the Dinosaurs,'' "I Don't Want To Keep My Room Clean,'' "Mama Don't Allow,'' and "The Pancreas Aria'' are just a few of the titles in their repertoire which have earned them enthusiastic reviews across Canada.
As Soundwright Distributing has noted, "Kirk and Magoo have erased the line between children's and adult music.'' Although their albums and cassettes have yet to hit `the big time,' Today's Parent magazine wrote, "the `obscure but great' award goes to this wacky pair.'' Their one-hour Bermuda show, already seen on Canadian television, is also available on video.
Mrs. Paula Maguire, producer of the three-month long children's theatre festival says that Kirk and Magoo provide an entertaining introduction to musical instruments and forms of music: "They perform everything from folk, rock and even opera -- but as "The Pancreas Aria'' suggests, there are plenty of laughs, and parents will certainly get as big a kick out of this show as their kids.'' Kirk, a classically trained musician who plays the fiddle, mandolin, accordion, banjo, electric guitar, percussion and trombone.
Magoo, a singer-songwriter, has appeared at hundreds of folk festivals and is the President of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals.
Together, they have produced the music and narration for Scholastic Canada's "Sing a Song of Mother Goose,'' and have performed Kirk's "Princess Soupy at the Opera'' with the Kingston Symphony.
Kidfest was formed in an effort to broaden and upgrade the quality of children's entertainment in Bermuda. Mrs. Maguire, herself a former professional dancer, and now a mother of two children, believes that children should be exposed to the very best in entertainment. To this end, she has succeeded in bringing some of Canada's best to Bermuda, including the delightful "Fish Whiskers'' puppet play, the Maritime Marionettes' version of "Rumpelstiltskin'' and, earlier this month, unforgettable clown Tom Kubinek.
Kirk and Magoo will be appearing in the Peacock Room of the Elbow Beach Hotel tomorrow, March 26 and Sunday, March 27 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Telephone 236-1085 for reservations, or tickets can be picked up at the door, $12 for children and $15 for adults.
