Meet the people who help out the needy
gave Hamilton Lions new insight into organisations at the forefront of assistance.
Lucy Willitts of the Medjugorje Peace Plan group, Karen Hodgson of the Sunshine League, and Marion Jones of Meals on Wheels all spoke at the weekly Lions' Club meeting at the MR Onions Restaurant.
Ms Willitts' said her group has sent a total of 21 containers of donated food and clothing to war-torn and weather-ravaged countries such as Bosnia, Jamaica and Haiti.
And she described herself as a spiritual person who was drawn to the work she performed.
"I feel pushed, maybe driven is a better word, to help those in need,'' she said. "I'm a doer. I am not a procrastinator, so I will help.'' And she encouraged others to become active in the community.
"We must all make a difference,'' she said. "Before the giving comes there has to be the asking. Somebody has to ring the doorbell, phone the number, make the announcement.
"A lot of people giving a little and then suddenly something quite magnificent has been achieved.'' And she said there were numerous avenues for people to help those in need.
"From the great Wall of China to feeding a child, what is needed is a pair of hands,'' she said.
Speaking on behalf of the meal home delivery service Meals on Wheels, Ms Jones said it took 128 volunteers each week to prepare, deliver and clean up each week.
But the service -- which began 23 years ago -- provided more than just food and were not just for people who were struggling financially, said Ms Jones.
And Ms Hodgson of the Sunshine League said the children's home will celebrate 80 years of operation next year.
But she pointed out that many of the problems which first led to the opening of the League still persisted.
SUNNY DAYS -- Governor Thorold Masefield was the first person to donate to the Sunshine League's tag day this year. The tags will be sold in Hamilton today and throughout the Island tomorrow.
