One-man vaudeville show comes to Elbow Beach
the Elbow Beach Hotel this weekend, when Tom Kubinek appears in the third Galla Kidfest production.
Describing himself as "master of the impossible and certified lunatic'', the Czech-born Canadian has performed all over Canada, the US and Europe.
Whether he is performing as a comedian, clown, actor, acrobat, magician, juggler or spell-binding storyteller, Kubinek's show appeals to adults as much as children.
He has appeared in special performances at Disney World, New Orleans' World Fair, the Brisbane international Comedy Bonanza, Circus Flora in the States, and co-wrote and performed in Moose, a slapstick dark comedy for the renowned British theatre company, The Right Size.
He has opened for such stars as Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Cole and Smokey Robinson, and was one of the official Canadian representatives at World Expo '92 in Seville, Spain.
Tomas Kubinek was three years old when he and his family fled from Czechoslovakia in the wake of the Soviet invasion in 1968. He says that after spending two months in a refugee camp outside Vienna, they eventually arrived in Canada with just $11 and two suitcases between them. At age five, he was taken to see his first circus -- and spent the rest of his childhood studying magic tricks, musical routines, and even the art of ventriloquism.
By 1985, he was a cast member of the Canadian production of Barnum where he sang, juggled fire, walked a tightrope and generally acted the fool.
In his sold-out appearance at the Vancouver Children's Festival, his act was described as "magic tricks that get bungled beyond belief and absurdities that escalate out of control.'' Kidfest is the brain-child of producer and former dancer, Mrs. Paula Maguire, who is anxious that Bermuda's children have the opportunity of experiencing the very best in children's theatre. If the last two productions (Fish Whiskers and The Maritime Marionettes) are anything to go by, this should be another hit with the Island's younger set.
Bermudian comedian Nadanja Bailey will perform the warm-up act.
Performances take place at Elbow Beach tomorrow, March 5 and Sunday, March 6.
Tickets at $12 (adults $15) will be available at the door for both performances tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. On Sunday, the 1 p.m. performance is already sold out but a few are still available for the shows at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. For further information, telephone 236-1085.
