Photographer slams BPPA exhibit
A local photographer was left fuming and withdrew his work after his artwork was incorrectly named in a recent Bermuda Professional Photography Association's (BPPA) exhibit.
Photographer Antoine Hunt claimed that BPPA board member Graeme Outerbridge "took it upon himself'' to name his exhibit, which consisted of eight photographs and a poem.
The title of the poem, Illa, was the name of the entire piece and Mr. Hunt said he intended for the poem to "explain a feeling that the work hopefully conveys''.
But Mr. Hunt said he returned to the Island after the opening of the show and was appalled to discover that the individual pieces were named.
"I hung my work and I wasn't here for the opening, and I found out that Graeme put names to each individual picture and that totally, absolutely offended me.'' "I can't understand how someone could take it upon him/herself to name someone else's work and think it's okay.
"The thing that bothers me is that people don't seem to get why I'm offended.
It's not just a picture, it's something I've made, it's like carving a piece of stone.
"Most of the work done on this Island is obvious, it has nothing to do with feeling or pure expression. People don't understand where I'm coming from, because of the underlying norms,'' he added.
Mr. Outerbridge said the furore was the result of "a simple mistake'', and the person who was supposed to have Mr. Hunt's instructions was not available.
