Plans for $12 million Flatts bridge unveiled
A bold business partnership yesterday unveiled pictures for a proposed $12 million Flatts Inlet Bridge.
Local construction companies Bermudatech Ltd. and OBM Architects described the roughly 750 foot bridge as "a made-in-Bermuda solution to the perennial traffic problem in Flatts Village''.
"It's a very slim profile bridge, but unique in design,'' said Bermudatech's general manager, Jonathan Baxter.
If built, the "Flatts Inlet Crossing'' will span from North Shore Road and cross over the site of the former railway bridge.
And its unique three-lane design will feature a "dedicated lane'' for pedestrians and horse drawn carriages.
"We are proposing a 100-year bridge with no replacement or repair costs for 100 years,'' Mr. Baxter added.
He went on to say the cost of such a project had often been an obstacle in the past, but pointed out that the venture would be achieved through a partnership between private and public sectors.
And he said if Government accepted a "long-term financing solution'', the bridge could be built in ten months.
The group will set up a booth during tomorrow's Flatts Festival Day to distribute brochures outlining the plan and also hand out questionnaires to determine public support for the concept.
