beautiful, breathtaking, and sweet smelling scenery in town.

And flowers will be the key to this year's decorating success.

As this ball will also celebrate the organisation's tenth anniversary, all the stops are being pulled out and committee member Mrs. Jane West, who is instrumental in coming up with the ball's themes, said: "We are going to blow everyone's mind with flower arranging.'' Rich red and orange flowers of the season in all shapes and sizes will decorate Marriott's Castle Harbour Resort ball room on November 25, from centre piece table decorations to floral fixtures on the wall.

The decorative process is not an easy one, says Mrs. West, but it is fun.

"Around June we try to come up with an idea for the theme for the ball. We are always at the mercy of Castle Harbour Hotel as far as time is concerned because we can't get in to decorate until the day of the ball, therefore, decorations have to be easy to assemble,'' Mrs. West said.

She added: "We sit around and discuss an idea and by the time it is executed it is almost exactly the opposite of what we thought of. I normally have it all in my head and I hate to put it down on paper. I'm too flighty and crazy to tell anyone about it.

"With Project 100, we have a certain image to uphold as the ball is seen as a premier social event on the Island, and we think it appeals to a huge cross section. Already we are almost sold out.

"The committee is looking to uphold the great reputation that we have and the balls have always seemed to be like a New York event with a Bermudian twist.'' Mrs. West said she thinks of ideas for the ball which are ever evolving and ever changing because "I might see something in a magazine that is absolutely perfect but then we can't get the right flowers or balloons, so we have to be flexible.'' She added that everyone who has been to the ball has been impressed by the calibre of the decorating because "we have a lot of smart people thinking about it''.

This year the committee has enlisted the aid of Bermudian Mrs. Judiann Smith who Mrs. West described as a very clever flower arranger. She has incredible innovative ideas and her work is known throughout the Island as being very beautiful, she said.

"Judiann Smith has been exposing herself to the creme-de-la-creme in the floral world, and she is famous for using a lot of local flora,'' Mrs. West said. "I am quite surprised and thrilled to see what she has got in store and we will all be helping her.

"We are going to blow everyone's mind with flower arranging. When people walk into the ball room at the hotel they should be very impressed with the display. And they will certainly appreciate the efforts.

"This is a tremendous, huge job as we have to decorate 45 tables which all have to have matching arrangements, and the flower fixtures on the wall all have to be the same height and look. We want everyone to walk in and gasp, so everything has to be spectacular.'' The committee has 150 feet of wall space to decorate and getting the floral fixtures along the wall will be a "technological nightmare'' as nothing can be nailed to the wall.

"I think this ball is going to be the best year because it will be awesome.

We have had so many other themes for the Project 100 balls but we really never did a theme of flowers.

"This is an anniversary ball and we all like to get flowers on our anniversary!'' When asked about the menu Mrs. West would not give any hints as to what was going to be served, but said it "will be the usual excellent Castle Harbour fare -- and you better save room for dessert!'' The food and the decor will complement the smooth and upbeat sounds of the world famous Lester Lanin Orchestras which will be performing at the ball.

Lester Lanin, who is known for bringing every party alive, has performed for everyone from Kings and Queens to super stars and debutantes.

There are still some tickets for the ball available. They can be obtained for $140 from Project 100 president Ms Barbara Whitecross at the Wedding Salon on Reid Street.
