Residents issue concerts plea
concert promoters to control parking and trash during weekend concerts.
One concerned resident, who did not want to be named, said because St. David's Cricket Club was being used more frequently to host concerts there was an increase in trash near their homes. She also complained that concert-goers were blocking driveways with their cars.
"Lately, there seems to be a concert on the field every weekend,'' the resident said. "But that is not what we are complaining about.
"After a concert, we are left to clean up the area and that is not fair. "As far as parking is concerned, people attending the concerts park their cars all over but mostly in residential parking bays blocking us in.'' She added that concert-goers did not respect the area, throwing their trash around, sometimes over hedges into people's yards.
The resident, who said she did not mind the noise from the concerts, asked concert-goers to be considerate to local residents.
"Our main concern is the trash and parking,'' she said, "The promoters feel that St. David's Islanders aren't complainers and we're not, but we are disgraced with the way the whole Battery area is left.
"We built the area up so it wouldn't look like a ghetto.'' She said people have a tendency to think St. David's Islanders are slow and laid back.
"We are not naive,'' she said. "I take pride in my area and it seems that St. David's is destined to have more shows in the future which is good for St.
David's.
"All I ask is that people be respectful, because we can start complaining.'' The resident wrote a letter on behalf of the community to the St. David's Cricket Club suggesting promoters pay a small fee to young club members so they can help clean the field after concerts.
"I also suggested that cars be directed up to St. Luke's Church for a small fee to park, if given permission.'' She added that promoters were making a substantial amount of money from the concerts and instead of helping to clean up "they just pack up their tents and leave the mess behind''.
"Residents are tired of the trash and not being able to drive out of their yards,'' she said.
"We don't mind the shows but we just want the promoters to meet us half way.'' Star Time Productions promoter Mr. Kim Tucker told The Royal Gazette that if St. David's residents have any problems "we want to sort them out''.
"So far we haven't had any complaints from residents in the area but if there are any, we would like to work on them,'' he said. "I think that the suggestions made by the resident about giving a fee to young club members to help pick up trash, and car parking at St. Luke's are good ideas.
"If there are things that St. David's residents are concerned about we all need to sit down together and discuss them.''
