Sporting stalwarts recognised
Curtis, who garnered a Sports Citation for his contribution to soccer, where he carried the whistle for more than two decades, from local shores to such reaches as Chicago, El Salvador, Haiti, Guatemala, Argentina and more, achieving the coveted FIFA Badge.
Edward De Jean, a former headmaster at Howard Academy, was likewise cited for his role in the game of soccer and his lead role in the formation of Devonshire Colts and the coaching, motivation and encouragement he gave to many of Bermuda's youngsters.
Former St. George's and Bermuda captain Wendell Smith was saluted for his dedication to the game of cricket, having achieved the highest run aggregate in Cup Match (1,143), together with a host of other batting records. His patience, skill and discipline at the top of the order often laid the foundation for victory, as did his leadership.
Having operated as the lead organiser and sponsor of the Telford Electric Mile, held annually since 1994, electrical supply company Telford Electric was singled out for its endeavours in the sport of track and field.
Another St. George's cricketer, one who attained the second highest aggregate, was also cited, big-hitting Lloyd James gratefully accepting the final citation issued.
A Special Achievement Award went to long-time soccer administrator Elroy Ratteray, a founding member of the Mount Hill United Football Club and Dandy Town Sports Club, and former BFA first vice-president.
Netball's Marva Trott similarly was held up as a beacon for her contribution to netball in the roles of coach, umpire and administrator, having been involved in some capacity for more than 25 years.
Other Achievement Awards went to Olympic swimmer Stephen Fahy, CAC champion bodybuilder Ian Brunson, fitness queen Aprille Choudhury-DeShield, top cyclist Kris Hedges, and reigning IOD World champion sailor Eugene (Penny) Simmons.
Several youngsters were also recognised in the National Junior Athlete Sponsorship Programme, with Tyler Butterfield (triathlon), Chris Foggo (cricket), Kijuan Minors (equestrianism), Graham Smith (swimming), Alexander Kirkland (sailing), Shar-Dae Whitter (track and field) and Ryan Mello (golf).
