The Bermuda Hospitals Board
Bermuda Hospitals Board will also gain the most from its $5 million capital campaign. Earmarked to receive $3.5 million, the Hospitals Board will put the generous corporate and individual donations towards the erection of a four level, 36,000 square foot addition to the south west side of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH). The completed renovations will realise four outpatient clinics -- following a global trend that enables patients to convalesce at home where possible -- a woman's diagnostic imaging clinic and larger, more technologically advanced operating theatres. Chairman of the Bermuda Hospitals Board, Clement Talbot said the Board meets monthly as a means of fulfilling its objective of "Approving policy decision. According to Kendaree Burgess-Fairn, spokesperson for the Bermuda Hospitals Board: "The Bermuda Hospitals Board had identified two major needs as a part of their strategic planning -- new operating suites and adequate space for ambulatory clinics. The Bermuda Health Alliance has donated $3.5 million towards purchasing equipment for the new surgical wing.'' In accordance with the Hospital Act of 1970, the Bermuda Hospitals Board is responsible for the operation and management of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and also St.
Brendan's Hospital. According to the Alliance, It was in the Spring of 1992 that the Bermuda Hospitals Board began to develop a strategic planning initiative. One of the outcomes was the decision to develop a master plan for the Paget facility that would identify and prioritise the structural and spatial needs over the next ten years. The two most important needs were identified as: new operating suites adequate space for ambulatory clinics "Phase One of the master plan includes the construction of a four level, 36,000 square foot addition to the south west side of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and 17,000 square feet of associated renovations,'' said a spokesperson.
"The basement level of the Hospital would house the new wing as well as provide an opportunity for improved efficiency of operations for the service and support staff. The ground level would provide offices and outpatient clinics such as diabetic education, a women's diagnostic imaging clinic and a psychiatric outpatient clinic. The additional space will house new operating suites and central service equipment.'' The total cost for the Bermuda Hospitals Board to implement the plan is $15,182,860. Of that cost, $11,691,732 will be funded by the Board. The cost to equip the new facilities is approximately $3,491,128. It is the Board's intention to fund the equipment through charitable donations, since Government does not provide direct assistance for medical equipment. Government will however, waive the import duty of 33 percent if the majority of the cost is obtained by donated funds.'' Heading the Bermuda Hospitals Board are executive director, Sheila Manderson; chairman, Clement Talbot and deputy chairman, Kenneth Spurling. The team is assisted by John Patton, Chief Medical Officer John Cann, Raymonde Dill, Kathryn Gibbons, Vivienne King, Myron Simmons, Geoffrey Moore, Jane Spurling and Trudy Snaith.
