Top award for firms which help women
their way to help women in the community.
The Crystal Award is being offered by the Premier-appointed Women's Advisory Council.
WAC was set up in 1987 to advise Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan on women's issues.
Chairperson Mrs. Kim Young said the new award was an important step in improving the woman's lot in society.
"The aim of this award is to encourage support systems for women in Bermuda,'' she said. "Particularly, we hope to encourage businesses to think more of their female employees.
"For example, working mothers should be able to enjoy better maternity benefits, after school care, day care and flexi time. We applaud any initiatives that make it easier for women in the business community.'' Companies who have led the way in banishing sexual harassment in the workplace could well qualify for the award, she said.
Mrs. Young added: "The vital role of women in the home and in business is recognised by only a handful of companies, individuals and organisations.
"It is hoped that this prestigious award will bring public attention to the needs of women and the importance of continuing to strive for the fulfilment of these needs.'' Individuals and companies, who can nominate themselves, must complete a nomination form and submit it to the Women's Advisory Council Crystal Award, at the Cabinet Office, Front Street, Hamilton, by November 10.
Finalists will be chosen by February 15, 1993, and the winner will be announced at a luncheon hosted by Sir John at Camden later that year.
