Twenty to be recognised for their bravery
ceremony at Government House on Thurday October 3, for their role in helping save a life or preventing disaster.
Governor Lord Waddington will present cedar-framed certificates of appreciation on behalf of the Bermuda Bravery Award Association, an organisation which recognises those who have gone beyond the call of duty and risked their lives for others.
Twenty two awards -- 16 Bravery Awards and six Lifesaving Awards -- will be handed out, with two recipients participating in two heroic acts.
The awards were drawn up following an appeal for public input by the Bermuda Bravery Award Association.
Those receiving awards include: Roland Hill (bravery). On August 28, 1996, he rescued two 13-year-old boys from rip tides off of Hungry Bay, Paget.
Donald Astwood (bravery). On June 17, 1993, he rescued the driver of a submerged car near Watford Bridge, Sandys.
Charles Wesley Wilson, Leonard Hypolite, Eloise Bell (bravery). In the summer of 1994, as an ambulance crew members, scrambled down an embankment to rescue a visitor who had fallen and broken a leg.
Dewilton (Butch) Brimmer, Charles Wesley Wilson (bravery). In March 1994, while on duty braved a hostile Court Street crowd -- some brandishing knives -- to give first aid to a gunshot victim.
Frederick Butterfield (bravery). On September 27 1994, rescued a mother and her four-year-old child from a burning Hamilton Parish home.
Stirling Smith (Life Saving). On May 21 1994, rescued three people from an overturned boat in bad weather five miles off the North Shore.
Freddie Smith (Life Saving). Accompanied Stirling Smith.
Michael Kelly (Life Saving). On October 25, 1993, rescued a two-year-old child from the jaws of a rottweiler dog.
Sgt. Paul Surju-Singh (Life Saving). On June 9 1995, while on duty resuscitated a seven-month-old baby which had stopped breathing.
Darren (Butch) Burchall (bravery). On June 28, 1994, rescued his sister -- who was in the shower -- from a house fire.
Glen Davies, Jaison Hansford-Smith, Huw Morris, and James Morrison (Life Saving). On May 25 1992, as a lifeguards at Horeshoe Bay Beach, rescued five swimmers caught in rip-tides.
Glen Davies, Jaime Pedro, Richard Forehead (bravery). On September 19, 1993, as lifeguards rescued nine swimmers caught in rip-tides off Horseshoe.
Reinosito Amores (Life Saving). On June 14, 1990, rescued and resuscitated a man found floating face down in the water off of Harbour Road.
P.c. Scott Drysdale (Life Saving). On April 8, 1994, while off-duty, he resuscitated an eight-month-old baby which had stopped breathing.
