Transport Minister Wayne Furbert made these changes to the present law through a bill called the Motor Car (Construction, Equipment and Use) Amendment Regulations 1996 which was approved in the House of Assembly on Friday.

Currently the law does not allow tinting of any kind but this is to be relaxed when the bill becomes law.

The legislation requires the windscreen and all other windows to be constructed of safety glass.

And the windscreen when measured must allow at least 70 percent of the light to shine through.

Drivers can tint the top of the windscreen -- no more than six inches in width -- with a shading material as long as the driver and front seat passenger are clearly visible.

All other windows can be tinted a little darker -- allowing at least 35 per cent of the light to shine through them -- if there are external mirrors on each of the car's sides.
