Achievement Awards
Sonesta Beach Hotel this Sunday, will hand out its 15th biennial achievement awards.
Among the recipients this year are Mr. Dalton E. Tucker (winner of the Sojourner Truth Award), Mr. John Duncan (recognised in the "musical talent'' category) and Ms Lynda Paynter (recipient of the business club's Special Recognition prize).
Others who will be walking to the winner's podium this weekend include Ms Virginia Wilson (honoured for her "distinguished service'' to the community), Mr. Jonathan Trott (winner of the "voluntary'' community service award), Ms Cynthia Stovell (winner of the "professional'' community service award) and John Barritt and Son Ltd. (winner of the "business'' community service prize).
Ms Patricia Humphrey, meanwhile, will be taking the club's Career Incentive Award, while Ms Jennifer Fisher, the ninth and final recipient, has been cited for the Special Sports Recognition Award.
Anyone who would like to attend the luncheon, which will take place at 1 p.m., can purchase tickets at Rainbow Corner Child Care (293-8009), CARE Computer Centre (292-0915) and Dottie's Unisex Boutique (292-2397).
Tickets for the event cost $40 a head.
*** Although Christmas is more than two months away, the Bermuda Junior Service League is planning to get into the spirit of the season a little bit early this year.
On November 5, the League will host "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas,'' a Yuletide-inspired trade show, at Admiralty House in Pembroke from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Among the attractions at the show, which the League is holding to raise money for a number of local causes, include extensive displays and shopping ideas, seasonal baked goods and handmade Christmas crafts and demonstrations by International Imports and Curious Cook Mr. Edward Bottone.

Tickets cost $15 each.
*** The Bermuda Quilters Guild, which normally meets on the first Thursday morning of each month at Peace Lutheran Church in Paget, has made alternate arrangements for next month.
On November 2, guild members are asked to meet at Verdmont in Smith's Parish at 3 p.m. instead of the usual location.
The change applies to the month of November only.
*** The Bermuda Youth Library has added a wide selection of new books to its shelves.
Among the recently acquired titles are Janet Beeler Shaw's "Meet Kirsten: An American Girl'' (the story of a nine-year-old immigrant's hardships as she and her family travel from Sweden to the Minnesota frontier of 1854), Richard Scott's "Jackie Robinson'' (a biography of the first black major league ball player) and Carolyn Keene's "Mystery of the Winged Lion'' (a Nancy Drew mystery in which Nancy and her friends get mixed up with kidnappers and a secret glass-making formula during a vacation in Venice).
Any youths who are interested in reading these or any of the dozens of other new books can do so by visiting the Library at 74 Church Street in Hamilton.
