The Island will be joining thousands of people around the world who gather in their respective countries for an evening of storytelling.

The event called Tellabration, is coordinated by the National Storytelling Association in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

Tellebration is designed as a benefit evening of storytelling for grown-ups.

The Bermuda evening is being produced by the Diversity Group at the Bermuda College and will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 8 p.m. at the Bermuda College Library at the Bermuda College Campus in Paget.

Local storytellers donating their talents in support of Tellebration are Sphiwe Dupe, Penny Fowkes, Robert Hay, Oda Mallory, Ruth Thomas and Jennifer Walzholz.

Mrs. Florenz Maxwell, who is co-producing the night with Earnestine Degraff, Yvonne Smith, Julia Jane Saltus and Brenda Dale, said there will be an exciting local programme of stories to appeal to grown-ups.

"We are thrilled to participate in this international effort to bring the art of storytelling to communities across the world,'' Mrs. Maxwell said.

She added: "It is an exhilarating experience to know that at the same time we are enjoying our stories in Bermuda, people will also be listening to stories in several places around the world.

"In past years, Tellabration has been held as far away as Scotland, Japan and Indonesia.'' Tickets for Tellebration are $10 and are selling quickly. They may be purchased from the Bermuda College Library, True Reflections, Twice Told Tales and from any of the committee members. Proceeds will support the Diversity Programme which is sponsored by the Bermuda College.

*** The Masterworks Foundation and the Bank of NT Butterfield and Son Ltd. invite you to join them in the First Annual Grand Art Festival By the Sea. The mission of the Grand Art Competition and festival is to celebrate the Visual arts in Bermuda.

And use the visual arts to capture the generational and historical qualities of Bermuda; to discover the artistic talents of our Bermudian and resident population; and to encourage people to use their talents and display them for others to see.

The entire community is welcome to spend the day celebrating the talents and the joy of the Visual Arts in Bermuda.

The public is invited to participate in the People's Choice Award, and as a bonus, everyone can express their "inner talent'' by entering the "Quick Art'' competition which restricts you to a rigid time frame in which you express your interpretation of Bermuda.

As a lead-up to May 31, individuals are encouraged to sign up for Artists Encounters Workshops to be held at various places across the Island. These will be conducted by established artists who will share techniques while they guide and encourage the participants.

Whether you consider yourself an artist or not you are encouraged to enter.

The proceeds from your entry fee of $5 will go towards establishing a Visual Arts Scholarship. It will be awarded to an aspiring young Bermudian artist who wishes to accept the challenge of pursuing the fine arts at a higher level.

There are several categories one can enter either under 8, under 21, special person, under 12, adult, staff, under 16, seniors, and professional artist.

Entry forms are now available at the Masterworks Gallery on Bermuda House Lane, Artcetera on Burnaby Street, Frameworks at the Paget Plaza on South Shore Road and the Bank of Butterfield main, Somerset and St. George's branches.

For any further information Masterworks at 295-5580 or Tracy Outerbridge at the Bank of Butterfield at 298-4615.

*** Saltus Senior School students will this week explore various career options during their second annual Careers Day.

On November 19, the Senior Three students and their parents will be addressed by Home Affairs Minister Quinton Edness before informally meeting with professionals from ten different career fields.

The invited guests will explain the educational preparation required for their trades, outline their jobs, and report on their daily routines.

Headmaster Trevor Rowell explained: "Senior Three students are at a crossroads in their education because they must select GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) majors which best suit them.

"Providing this kind of forum helps parents and pupils explore career options and plan the best educational preparation for the future.'' This year the students will have the opportunity to speak with such professionals as Tourism Minister David Dodwell, lawyer Richard Spurling, accountant Andrew Parsons, and architect David Benevides.
