Appeal for war victims
Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Mrs. Lucy Willitts wants to send badly-needed supplies to the trouble spot.
And she has appealed for Bermudians to help her big effort.
Mrs. Willitts made her appeal after returning from the country which is wracked by civil war.
She went there with others on a mercy trip, hoping to help the besieged people and assess what aid fellow Bermudians could offer.
And she now plans to organise the shipment of a container of supplies to the country.
Mrs. Willitts said a local shipping expert saw no obstacle to taking a container from the United States to Bosnia.
But the problem of shipping a container from New York to Bermuda and back had still to be resolved.
Mrs. Willitts said supplies badly needed included children's pharmaceuticals, tinned food, powdered milk, and medicine.
But the appeal did not include clothing.
Mrs. Willitts said children in Bosnia were thrilled to bits when they received "cuddlies'', such as soft toys.
"We distributed things like canned goods and milk, but these children have no toys at all and you should just see their little faces light up when they are handed a teddy bear!'' Mrs. Willitts, who worked last year with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, said the experience had changed her life.
She met people who had seen and lived through appalling atrocities.
Mrs. Willitts is also planning, with other Bermuda residents, to arrange safe passage for a refuge woman and her mother to another European country.
She had originally met the woman during a previous visit to the Bosnian region of Medjugorje. See Living on Page 19 for a feature on Mrs. Willitts and her experience in Bosnia.
