Archives receives generous gift
Richard Clive Saunders, has given a big boost to the Bermuda Archives' photographic collection. She has donated 15 negatives of some of her husband's favourite work from the Pittsburgh Project and shots from Harlem -- some of which appeared in such prestigious publications as The New York Times, Life and Ebony.
The gift joins the Archives' 77 prints taken by Mr. Saunders during the visit to Bermuda of HRH Prince Phillip in 1959 to celebrate the Island's 350th anniversary. Originally, Mrs. Saunders had given the prints to the Bermuda Arts Council, but the organisation presented them to the Archives for permanent preservation and access for future generations of Bermudians to enjoy.
The Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs the Hon. Leonard Gibbons accepted the gift at a ceremony at the Bermuda National Gallery, where a special collection of Mr. Saunders' work is on display.
"I am delighted that the Archives has received the negatives of this important collection of Bermudian photographs, taken by Bermuda's most acclaimed photographer,'' Mr. Gibbons said.
