Award set up in memory of nurse
well-known Bermudian nurse who died in Canada aged 54.
Dr. Alfreda Anne Elizabeth Simons Kartha died recently at her Ontario home.
Last year she received an award for excellence in nursing education from a Canadian nursing society.
It has now been revealed the award will be presented each year in her name.
Dr. Kartha, formerly of Cedar Hill, Warwick was the second daughter of the late Mr. Clarence Simons and Mrs. Ruth Simons.
She was born on December 2, 1939 and educated at Purvis Primary School and Berkeley Institute. Dr. Kartha went on to get a diploma in Nursing in England.
In 1967, Dr. Kartha moved to Canada where she was a public health nurse before beginning her career as a nurse educator in Toronto.
She obtained a Bachelor and Master's degree in nursing and a PhD.
Dr. Kartha lectured at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Nursing and taught at the University of Western Ontario's Faculty of Nursing and the University of Michigan.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kartha focused on gerontology, studying and conducting workshops on the care of the elderly.
In October 1990, Dr. Kartha was asked by the Bermuda Age Concern Group to present a workshop on Aging and the care of the Elderly.
She was a founder of the Ontario Universities Coalition for Education in Health Care of the Elderly (ECAH). She was honoured at this year's annual conference when the address was named the Alfreda Kartha Lecture.
Last fall Dr. Kartha was given the first Alfreda Simons Kartha Award for Excellence in Nursing Education by the Iota Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. This award will presented annually in her name.
She is survived by children Mohan and Maya Kartha; sisters Frances Dismont, Naomi Schroter and Patricia Simons and numerous other relatives and friends.
