Band members scoop awards -- the arts scene with Nancy Acton

received their tropies from Director of Music Major Barrett Dill, E.M., A.V.C.M. at a gala banquet at the Southampton Princess Hotel.

Recipients were: Sgt. Reginald Hewey, Ike Callabras award for Most Immaculate Appearance and Bearing; Bandsman Stanley Ward, Major Laurie Dunn award for Most Improved Musician.

Acting Sgt. Marie Trott, Derek Joell award for Most Humourous Member; Bandsman Andre m Esdaille, Capt. Horace Gibbons award for Most Consistent attendance; Sgt. Ramon Smith, Major Leslie Lowe award for Best Senior NCO; Acting Sgt.

Aiden Stones, Major Kenneth Dill award for Most Outstanding Junior NCO.

The event also included a special tribute to former Regiment Bermudian bandmasters and Directors of Music, led by first Director Captain Horace Gibbons. Jim McCann , one of Ireland's top recording artists, is being flown in by Bermuda's Irish community to help them celebrate St.Patrick's Day (March 17) in grand style at La Coquille Restaurant.

Mr. McCann was a member of the famous Irish group The Dubliners in the 1970s, and had his first hit with the Ludlow Trio and their recording of `The Sea Around Us,' which was the first record of its type to become number one in Ireland.

The artist's biggest success was his recording of `Grace,' which remained in the Irish charts for 36 weeks. His albums include `Live at the Stadium,' `Grace and other Irish Love Songs,' and `The Collection,' for which he won a gold disc.

Mr. McCann has performed internationally, and also made several TV specials for both Irish television (RTE) and the BBC. In addition he was a member of the original cast of `Jesus Christ Superstar.' His music, knowledge of Irish history, and infectious sense of humour, all portend an unforgettable evening's entertainment.

The St. Patrick's Day celebration is black tie and will include dinner.

Thursday, March 8 marks the opening of Canadian artist Judith Leidl 's exhibition of her Bermuda work at Masterworks on Bermuda House Lane off Front Street. Miss Leidl, whose specialty is watercolours and collage, is currently artist-in-residence at Masterworks' Terrace Gallery in Dockyard. To view her work there 234-0701 for an appointment.
