Bermuda hosting World Debates

on the island for the Ninth World Schools' Debating championships during the first week in February.

Confirmed entries have been received from Argentina, Australia, Bermuda, Canada, England, Germany, Israel, Latvia, New Zealand, Peru, Scotland, Singapore, the US and Wales.

A team from the Czech Republic is expected to be confirmed within a few days and competitors from, Jamaica, Lithuania and Pakistan are pursuing visas. The Bermuda team selected after the recent National Championships comprises Trevor Leitch (Saltus), Rashan Smith (Berkeley Institute), Jennifer Rhind (Mount St.

Agnes) and Jordan Zancanella (Berkeley Institute). Gladstone Thompson will be coach.

The tourney takes place between February 1-7. The students are expected to arrive on January 30 and be housed with 80 local host families.

In its early rounds the tourney will be held in schools throughout the Island and at the Bermuda College. Premier David Saul will chair the final at St.

Paul's Centennial Hall.

HONOUR FOR LIBRARIAN AWD Honour for librarian The American Library Association has appointed the head of Bermuda's youth library, Florenz Maxwell, to one of its award-winning committees.

Mrs. Maxwell, who was recognised by the Queen in this year's Honours List, accepted the invitation to serve on the 1998 Newberry Committee which is responsible for reviewing and recognising outstanding children's books.

DEALDLINE PUSHED BACK MIL Deadline pushed back The deadline for tenders to knock down old US Navy buildings and remove asbestos has been moved back.

Tenders for the Bermuda Land Development Company contract were due to be in by lats Friday.

But a spokesman for the contract agent, consulting engineers Woodbourne Associates, said because of difficulties caused by the Christmas holidays, the deadline has been extended to January 24.

The contract involves the demolition of five buildings in an industrial zone in St. David's. Fuel tanks also have to go and the area will have to be landscaped.

The contract also involves the removal of asbestos -- but the spokesman said there were no large quantities involved.

BURGLARY TRIAL DATE SET CTS Burglary trial date set Two men charged with breaking and entering a Warwick sportswear shop over a year ago appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Alvin Symonds, 20, of Khyber Pass, Warwick and 21-year-old Antonio Cabral of Pigeon Rock Lane, Pembroke, who deny the charges, will be tried on April 11.

Two hundred dollars in cash and clothing and sneakers worth $2,767.10 were removed from the Sports Source between November 30 and December 1, 1995.

SEX ASSAULT REPORTED CTS Sex assault reported A man allegedly sexually assaulted a 15-year-old student in broad daylight at the Hamilton bus terminal.

Police spokesperson Evelyn James Barnett said the Southampton girl told Police the incident occurred at about 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The student said a man approached her and rubbed her bottom. The girl pushed the man who fled through the Washington Mall.

The man was described as about 18-years-old, light-skinned and of heavy build.

He was wearing black jeans and a brown-striped jacket.

MOTOR CAR DAMAGED CRM Motor car damaged Police are investigating a report that a car was wilfully damaged at a gas station.

Police spokeswoman Evelyn James Barnett said the operator of a North Shore gas station reported that the car had been damaged between 7 p.m. on Monday and 7.40 a.m. on Tuesday.

Mrs. James Barnett said the culprit was believed to have entered the black, four-door Nissan Sentra Saloon via the sunroof -- totally destroying it -- and searched the interior.
