Bermuda Red Cross Fact Sheet

It saves lives by collecting blood for the Hospital. Approximately 2,200 units are collected each year. Clinics are held on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons using some 58 volunteer nurses and refreshment hostesses.

The Blood Donor Centre.

The Red Cross pays for one half of the salaries of the nursing supervisor and phlebotomists (intravenous nurses from the lab to work during the clinics.

They are involved in promoting awareness in Organ and Tissue Donation.

Transport Services.

They provide transportation for the elderly and the indigent to and from doctors' offices, laboratories, clinics, physiotherapy and dialysis.

Nearly 4,000 drives are provided each year by 50 volunteer drivers. They also transport members to and from the Golden Hour meetings. The coordinator for this job is paid an honorarium to cover telephone costs.

Hospital Equipment Rent al.

They rent hospital beds, cribs, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and canes to those in need; 897 pieces of equipment are rented to approximately 700 renters annually.

They make donations of surplus crutches, walkers and wheelchairs to our sister societies in the Caribbean. There are 18 volunteers who each put in 100 hours a year. This service of the Red Cross brings in between $65,000 to $75,000 annually.

Health and Safety.

They train people to help others who need first aid and CPR. Since 1993 they have trained 2,240 people in CPR and first aid using 16 instructors.

A babysitting course certifying students ages 12 to 15 teaches how to deal with situations whilst babysitting. Since 1997 they have trained 97 students.

They sell first aid kits of various size to individuals and companies.

They have recently introduced Pet First handbooks that we sell for $12.95 with $2.00 donated to the SPCA.

They continue to provide the Department of Health and the AllanVincent Smith Foundation with HIV/AIDS information packets and leaflets.

Junior Red Cross.

Unfortunately, this area has not been running for several years, as we do not have a youth coordinator. When they were running they taught children the values and principles of the Red Cross as well as basic first aid and accident preparedness.

Schools participated in regular visits to rest homes with their adopted grandparents, kite flying at Easter, carol singing and Christmas decorating.

Golden Hour Club.

They brighten the lives of senior citizens by sponsoring bi-weekly activities.

There are 80 members who attend these activities, which consist of fitness talks, guest speakers, bands and choirs from various schools to entertain them, and bingo.

They organise a `Bring and Buy Table', their fundraising project for the Extended Care Unit two outings a year.

A morning coffee social is offered at the Canadian Pacific's Hamilton Princess in June and the annual picnic at Astwood Park in July.

Disaster Relief.

They are a member of the Emergency Measures Organisation, (EMO) and have a seat on the Steering Committee. They signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bermuda Government under which emergency supplies required in a disaster would be available from the American Red Cross and the British Red Cross.

They have installed a 20 kilowatt standby generator at Charleswood. This will assist in emergency situations where they can turn their training rooms into triage rooms and/or communication rooms for the EMO.

International Relief.

They help other countries in time of need by raising funds for overseas relief.

Ann Spencer-Arscott In atten dance How many members do they have? 304 members: 85 active annual members and 219 life members 158 in the various services.

What is their relationship with the International Red Cross? They are a branch of the British Red Cross. However, they are an independently operated organisation and a Bermuda Registered Charity.

In 1991 they joined the International Development Project of the American Red Cross field units and the Red Cross National Societies. The major benefit of the partnership is to make available to us any American Red Cross programmes.

They have very good relationships with the Canadian Red Cross and their sister Societies in the Caribbean.

All proceeds will benefit the Bermuda Red Cross.
