Bermudian soprano heads to Carnegie

Bermudian soprano Marcelle Clamens, featured artist in a special Gala Concert this week, has been invited by Artists International Presentations to perform next year at either Carnegie Hall or The Lincoln Centre, and later this month, she leaves for Italy where she will sing in an international competition.

Ever since she first thrilled audiences with her debut in Verdi's "Requiem'' for the Bermuda Philharmonic, Bermuda has been keenly watching her progress through the famed College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Throughout her college studies (she has a Bachelors degree in Music), she was on the Dean's List -- no small achievement as an adult student who had never received any formal training.

The programme will include works by Mozart, Schubert, Handel, Puccini, Handel, Faure, and others, in a selection of arias, chanson, lieder, as well as songs from the musical theatre and traditional spirituals.

Accompanying Mrs. Clamens will be Sylvia Plyler, professor of Accompanying and Vocal Repertoire at Cincinnati, who also coaches annually in Italy and Austria.

During her stay in Bermuda, Ms Plyler has agreed to coach local singers and accompanists in a series of Master Classes. The public is welcome to watch the final Class which will be held on Monday, June 23 at 7.30 p.m. in the Anglican Cathedral.

The Gala Concert which will also be a fundraiser for the Dunbarton School of Music will take place at St. John's Church, Pembroke, on Saturday, June 21 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets at $40 for adults ($20 for students and seniors) are available from Meyer Agencies Ltd., Opus One Encore and Pianos Plus.
