Big financial boost for Bermuda students
Bermudians.
The Bank of Bermuda is providing the cash through annual scholarships, grants, and achievement awards.
President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Donald Lines announced the winners at a ceremony last week at the bank's Hamilton head office.
He revealed the bank contributed over $170,000 last year to the education of Bermudians.
Winner of this year's prestigious Sir John W. Cox University for Post-Graduate Studies was Mr. Paulo J. Correia.
The scholarship is worth $15,000 a year for up to four years.
Paulo was educated at Warwick Academy and Saltus Grammar School, and graduated from the Saltus Post Graduate Year programme in 1989.
He entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in May completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering with perfect grades.
Next month, Paulo will enrol at Stanford University in California.
He has been admitted to the Master of Science degree programme in Mechanical Engineering.
On returning to Bermuda, he plans to pursue an engineering career after gaining experience in America and Europe.
Mr. Andrew Riker was awarded this year's Sir Henry Tucker University Scholarship.
The award is given to a Bermudian of outstanding scholastic ability, sportsmanship and character, and who is entering a college.
It is worth $15,000 a year for up to four years.
A graduate of Saltus Grammar School, Andrew gained nine GCSE passes -- all grade As.
Andrew has been accepted at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
He has chosen to study mathematics, and leans towards a career in accountancy.
Three people were awarded Bank of Bermuda Education Grants -- Ms Michelle Correia, Mr. Michael Davidson and Mr. Michael Maughan.
The grants are worth $6,000 a year for up to three years.
Michelle is entering her first year at Queen's University in Canada.
She attended Bermuda High School for Girls and the Saltus Post Graduate Year programme. She is planning a law career.
Mr. Michael Davidson, who went to Saltus Grammar School and Trinity College, has recently completed his first year studies at Queen's University.
He is pursuing a degree in Life Studies.
Mr. Michael Maughan has been accepted in the Florida Institute of Technology, and intends taking a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Five $4,000 Bank of Bermuda President's Awards for Scholastic Achievement were handed out.
These go to those who show academic ability, good moral character, community involvement, as well as athletic and cultural qualities.
They went to Mr. Jonathan Saunders, Ms Patricia Furtado, Mr. Stephen Bourne, Mr. Andrew Rossiter and Ms Marshalita Cross.
Jonathan, a Bermuda College graduate, has been accepted into Bradley University to major in Civil Engineering, with a minor in Journalism.
Patricia, who attended Northlands Secondary and Bermuda College, is now entering Acadia University to get a Computer Science degree.
Stephen has been accepted into the Southern College of Technology to study Civil Engineering.
Andrew is studying Economics at the University of Western Ontario. He hopes to move on to a career in international business or accounting.
Marshalita, who went to Warwick Academy and Bermuda College, is now at Marist College, hoping to get a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
