The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) has agreed to be a part of Sunpendulum, a project of Austrian scientist and artist Hofstetter Kurt.

Also heavily involved is the Institute of Computer Graphics of the Vienna University of Technology.

Mr. Kurt said: "The Sunpendulum will be a permanent artistic/scientific installation, reflecting the flow of time by enhancing the perception of the rotation of our planet and the everlasting transitions between day and night.

"The sky over 12 time zones around the earth will be captured by video and sent to 12 monitors arranged in a circle within a pavilion over the Internet.'' The scientific goal, Mr. Kurt explained, was to provide the technique to continuously transfer images via Internet and synchronise them for display in the pavilion.

The pavilion itself is a structure which can be dismantled and go "on tour''.

It is expected that it will come to Bermuda sometime in 2001.

A spokesperson for BUEI pointed out that Bermuda's technological sophistication allows them to participate in the project, a sentiment Mr. Kurt echoed.

"We are glad to have found BUEI as our partner in Bermuda. It is a very well equipped facility that perfectly meets our requirements,'' he said.

Cameras will be set up in Spain, New Orleans, Azores, Grenada, Cairo, Dubai, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Tokyo, the Midway Islands and Bermuda.
