Call for study of racism
over the past few years in Hong Kong.
That is the view of Bermuda College lecturer, Mr. Walton Brown, who fears the Island may be overtaken by events.
Speaking to Hamilton Lions at the Hamilton Princess Hotel, Mr. Brown said the United Kingdom was moving towards unity with its European neighbours and decisions about its links with former colonies must soon be made.
He said: "Comments have been passed in the Commonwealth Office. There seems to be a choice between complete autonomy and some form of integration.
"Something must be done about the constitutional limbo in the present climate. Britain's closer links with Europe will impact seriously on Bermuda.
"These issues do loom large on the horizon and it is time for our political leaders to look at them in a meaningful way.'' Mr. Brown also spoke about problems of racism and immigration which are still appearing on the Island.
He called for a study into racism which he said had a long history in Bermuda.
And he said immigration also needed reviewing. Mr. Brown said: "We need to offer employment standards to the growing numbers of immigrant workers who work long hours for low pay. They are open to abuse.
"These are the kind of issues the Government have to contend with and institute policies.''
