Bermuda's pioneer of the fight for physically disabled rights, the late Miss Margaret Carter.

In a two-hour ceremony at Summerhaven on Sunday, the former Human Rights commissioner was remembered for her tireless efforts to bring recognition to the plight and rights of the Island's physically handicapped.

Community Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons gave the opening speech at the event attended by Shadow Community Minister Mr. Reginald Burrows, other politicians and close friends of Miss Carter.

Miss Rosie Fox and Mr. Ronald Lightbourne -- life-long companions of Miss Carter, jointly received the award on her behalf.

Last year the Commission handed out its first human rights awards to two local men who "spent much of their lives trying to forge better relations between races'' -- former Community Affairs Minister the Hon. Robert (Bobby) Barritt and civil rights activist Dr. Roosevelt Brown.
