Charities go into the green after charity golf tourney

Five lucky Bermuda charities were better off yesterday after they received the proceeds of a golf tournament.

The sixth Classic Ross (Blackie) Talbot charity golf tournament raised a total of $100,000 and Mr. Talbot was on hand, together with his son Clement Talbot and other organisers, to present the cheques.

Riding for the Disabled, Bermuda Society for the Blind, the Bermuda Mental Health Foundation and the Sunshine League all received $17,500. The Bermuda Hospitals Board received $30,000.

On behalf of the Bermuda Hospitals Board, spokesperson Kendaree Burgess-Fairn said their money would go towards creating an isolation unit at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

A plaque commemorating the donation is also to be erected outside the room, she added.

Mr. Talbot Sr. said he was pleased that the event had raised so much money. He added that he hoped the tournament would take place next year, with the possible involvement of visitors to the Island.
