Club endures landscaping upgrade

endured a major landscaping upgrade. Mr. Malcolm Griffiths of the West End Development Company, who was a consultant on the landscaping side of things, helped to give the area surrounding the clubhouse a new improved look. And manager Mrs. Leslie Hayward, assistant manager Mr. Matthew Dill and director Mr. David Dill said they are pleased with the changes. Mr. Griffiths worked closely with the management in creating a tropical view looking down from the restaurant to the water side. Exterior changes include the appearance of a rolling green lawn sweeping downward from the top of the property to the beach side. "The hillside leading down to the new restaurant, from the beach to the western boundary of the property was completely recontoured,'' said horticultural manager Ms Fiona Doe. And in addition to making the area look more beautiful, six large palm trees have been moved and planted at the deck of the new patio restaurant to give off even more of a tropical feeling. The capital project this year is to landscape the area around the new restaurant, said Ms Doe. "When we've finished with this area, we'll move on to other areas,'' she said, noting that the hotel plans to plant shrubs around the cottages to add colour and a sense of privacy for the guests. As well, there are plans to improve a square foot garden, which is located on the east side of the premises. The garden comprises two beds, both of which are 25 foot long and four foot wide. "The idea of a square foot garden is to plant herbs and vegetables in units of square feet to maximise the space,'' said Ms Doe, noting that the garden will then generate lots of produce from a small area.

"We're also taking compost from the kitchen and using it for the garden and surrounding areas,'' she said. Once the capital project has been completed, the landscaping team will work on the greenhouse and turf nursery, also located on the east side of the property. "We want to try and grow lots of crops for in house use,'' said Mrs. Doe, "so that one day, all of our herbs and vegetables come from the premises.'' Other exterior changes have already been completed such as the removal of an unsightly access road, which led from the lower cottages to the front of the restaurant. Also the placement of additional parking facilities, and a narrow patio deck, which was built on the western side of the property joining the pool and the restaurant facilities, has been erected. "I think it looks absolutely fantastic,'' Mr. Griffiths said. "It's now one of the nicest spots on the Island. We have made what once was an ordinary area look first class.''
